Welcome to Meditations With Carol, dedicated to helping people reduce the damaging effects of stress and increase physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing using mindfulness based meditations. I’m Dr. Carol Hendricks, and I have enjoyed my own practice of mindfulness meditation for many years. It helps me move in the direction of any goal I set for myself, whether it’s relaxing when I feel stressed, getting to sleep when I have a lot on my mind, or working on a personal goal, such as eating a healthier diet. In addition to simply knowing that it makes me feel better, mindfulness meditation is a technique that is fully supported by scientific research.
I knew that I wanted to be a psychologist since I was a teenager and I majored in Psychology at Tufts University, but I did not pursue my career in psychology until later in life. First I raised my three daughters and then decided to make a major life change, returned to school and received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2006. Meditations With Carol, LLC is based in Fairfield, Connecticut, where I am a psychologist in private practice.
I love leading meditations and started recording my meditations over ten years ago, while in graduate school. It is challenging and exciting when someone asks me to create a meditation for a specific problem they are facing, and I can guide them toward coping with or resolving whatever concern they are having. I often record a meditation during a session and then give my client the CD. Many clients tell me that they have listened to their CDs over and over again, sometimes daily. While those recordings are helpful to my clients, they only reach a small number of people.
Recently, I have led meditations for charitable organizations. I enjoyed leading a group as part of a fund raiser for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. But it wasn’t until I led a meditation for a support group at the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, for caregivers and for people in the early stages of the disease, that I truly dedicated myself to getting this project off the ground. After the meditation one group member said, “I could follow along when I was listening to you, but I don’t think I could do this by myself. There’s something about your voice, it’s very soothing. Is there any chance that you could make a recording?” That was it. I was both humbled and exhilarated that I was able to bring a sense of relaxation and peacefulness to a group of people who were struggling with the knowledge that they had a terrible disease that would gradually rob them of their memory and change their lives and the lives of their families permanently.
There is no problem to manage or goal to achieve that cannot be addressed in some way through mindfulness meditation. I have led meditations on everything from managing anxiety about pregnancy, labor and delivery, to exploring artistic self expression and creativity. The most common requests are for experiencing relaxation, getting better sleep and reducing anxiety at work, which is why I selected these three topics for my initial recordings. My first professional recording “Relaxing Moments in Stressful Times”, uses mindfulness based meditation techniques to teach a way of relaxing. While the focus of this recording is on relaxation, it may also lead to drowsiness and be helpful with sleep.
